VIJAYAWADA: A cold war is brewing between the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority. As a result, there is lack of co-ordination between the two civic wings that is causing problems in the implementation of the chief minister’s development package for the city. Municipal commissioner Praveen Prakash’s actions, in particular, are catching the UDA authorities unawares as the former is allegedly having his own way in going about the development process. Be it the construction of a central road divider on the Mahatma Gandhi Road at a cost of Rs 40 lakh or the expansion of the busy B R P Road at One Town or the G S Raju Road at Gandhinagar, the municipal commissioner reportedly did not keep the UDA authorities informed about his plans, though the UDA is the co-ordinating agency for the implementation of the CM’s development package. The UDA officials allege that the municipal commissioner got the divider on MG Road constructed in haste in view of the recent one-day international cricket match even as the road is due for expansion. In fact, the commissioner came under fire even from the mayor, corporators and local MLA Kota Srinivasa Rao on the issue. The conflict between the UDA and the VMC authorities on various issues has gone to the notice of Krishna district collector B R Meena who reportedly asked the UDA heads to observe restraint as far as the municipal commissioner’s actions are concerned. For the record sake, however, both the VMC and the UDA authorities maintain that everything is fine between them but they are speaking their mind out in private. On the other hand, city mayor P Anuradha is unable to hide her displeasure against the municipal commissioner as well as UDA vice-chairman J Suresh Babu who, according to her, are acting at their will. Sources told The Times of India that the mayor is particularly unhappy with the UDA for not co-operating with the VMC on the road expansion issue. The VMC has requested the UDA to forward proposals to the state government for modification of the city master plan for expansion of important roads like Prakasam Road and Nageswara Rao Pantulu Road. But, so far the UDA has not responded to the VMC’s plea. It is learnt that a UDA director U Narsaraju is opposing the expansion of Nageswara Rao Pantulu road since his shop is on it. Now, the commissioner has decided to place the issue before the Council for taking a resolution so that it could directly forward the proposal to the state government. Either way it is for the state government to issue the notification modifying the master plan. “If the UDA does not get it done, we will manage, a VMC official said.
